Preparing for International Travel

No matter how seasoned of a traveler you may be traveling internationally can be a big headache. It can be a little scary and overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re doing! Gone are the days of a simple direct flight if you are flying overseas as you most likely will have to worry about connecting flights depending on where you are going. You also now have to consider the travel rules of the country you are visiting, not just the rules of the US. You can make your trip much easier if you do just a few simple things. The basic theme of all of this is to PLAN. Traveling overseas is not something you ever do on a whim no matter what the movies try to tell you!

1. Get your passport

This is quite the process! You want to make sure that you do this in plenty of time as the process could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on how busy the passport office is and if it is peak traveling time. Plan to do this at least 6 months before your trip and check out the passport office website ahead of time to make sure that you have everything you will need. Once you have your passport go ahead and make photocopies of it to leave with someone when you leave just in case you lose yours while you’re on your trip. They can send it to the embassy for you to help you home easier!

2. Check out the rules of the country you are visiting

Certain countries will require you to have certain vaccines before you can travel. They may also have restrictions as to what can be brought in and out of the country. It’s better to know about any restrictions before you travel rather than be detained when you try to enter the country. If you know someone who has visited the country you’re going to ask them about the security at the airports. Some airports are very lax in their security while others may be much more strict than what you are used to so it’s best to get an idea ahead of time.

3. Prepare to document your travel

You will never be able to remember everything about your trip! Going to a new place will be so overwhelming and although you won’t be able to wait to tell everyone everything you experienced, chances are that when you get back home you will not be able to recall much of it. Make sure that you a journal and a good camera so that each day you can record all of your adventures. If there are a lot of people waiting to hear about your trip then you may want to check out a website hosting service such as GoDaddy that can help you set up a page where you can send people who want to know all the details of your trip. This will allow you to share photos and details in a more detailed format than social media alone.

Don’t get so overwhelmed by all that you need that you forget to enjoy your trip! Be sure to plan, plan, plan and don’t procrastinate and your trip will be as pleasant as possible! Have a great trip!
